There are few things as exciting as getting a new puppy. That cute little lovable ball of fluff is irresistible. However, it doesn’t usually take long to realize how much work having a new little puppy can be. They are a lot of work, but putting in effort to teach them from a young age is so helpful is creating a well behaved dog that you can enjoy to the fullest. This means that you are going to have to work at teaching them some basic cues. Blitz K9 Club is here to share some of the basic cues that every puppy should learn.
Teach These Basic Cues to Your Puppy
Before you can get too deep into training your dog, there are some basic cues that they need to master first.
– Come When Called: One of the first things that you will want your puppy to master is coming when they are called. This means that they first have to learn their name. You will want to combine their name with the single word “come.” Your puppy will more than likely learn best if you have a small training treat that will reinforce the positive behavior.
– Walking on Leash: It may seem like every dog should just naturally walk well when they are on a leash. This isn’t usually the case though. It is something that dogs have to learn. Start small as you get them used to having the leash on. This is going to feel odd to your puppy. You can start getting them to walk with you after they have gotten used to the leash in general. Come up with a cue such as “let’s go” to help them get used to walking on leash.
– Sit: Another great cue for your puppy to learn is how to sit when asked. This can be done easily using a treat as well. You will get down to their level and then stand while saying the word “sit.” Usually, as they look at you, they will naturally sit down. This is when you will say yes and then give them a treat. As you do this over and over again, they will learn what that word means.
– Stay: Learning to stay is an important lesson for your puppy. It can keep them out of danger. This should be done once your puppy has mastered the sit command. While your puppy is sitting, you will say the word “stay.” You also need to come up with a release word that will let them move again once the allotted time for staying has past.
