It is common for dog owners to excitedly buy their new dog a comfy bed to sleep in at night shortly after they bring the dog home. While it can be exciting to create this cozy space for your new pet, it can be discouraging when you find that the dog isn’t sleeping on the beloved bed that you bought for them. It can be a real head scratcher when you know that on average dogs spend 12-14 hours a day sleeping. It often leaves owners wondering why the dog isn’t in love with their dog bed. Blitz K9 Club is here to explore some of the possible reasons why your dog isn’t into the dog bed that you bought for them.
Reasons Many Dogs Prefer to Sleep on the Floor Rather than a Dog Bed
Sometimes, it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact reason your dog is choosing the floor over the dog bed you purchased. However, here are some strong contenders as to why they prefer the floor most of the time.
– Temperature: Dogs are drawn to places with their ideal temperature for sleeping. They will be searching for cool places during the summer and warmer places during the winter. If the bed you bought is plush, it is possible that it is too warm in the summer. If it is in the corner of the room with no sunlight, they will be drawn to warmer spots of sunlight or by the fireplace during the winter.
– Size: There is a chance that the bed you bought is the wrong size as well. If the bed is too small, the dog will feel confined. When the bed is too large, it isn’t as cozy as they would perhaps prefer.
– Nearness to You: Most dogs will choose places that are near their owners or those that they are closest to. If the bed isn’t in proximity to you or the person they love most, they will sleep on the floor near that person instead.
– Familiarity: Another reason why your dog might choose the floor over a dog bed is simply because they aren’t used to sleeping in a dog bed. Many dogs will choose the floor over an actual bed for a number of different reasons. If the dog isn’t used to sleeping in a dog bed, that isn’t going to be the place that they naturally choose to be. This can be especially true with rescue dogs.
